Jazz masters in piano and trumpet join UTA for jazz on the lawn
Stefan Karlsson, a native of Sweden, was born into a musical family. His father played piano professionally and inspired his interest in piano and jazz. He also began church organ lessons at 13 and continued to study into his college years. Following high school, Stefan came to the United States on a scholarship to study at the University of North Texas, where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree and was a member of the university’s acclaimed One O’Clock Lab Band for three years, touring nationally and internationally and participating in five of their recordings. Stefan’s music has been featured in movies, including Sugar Hill and Twenty Bucks, and television series, including Melrose Place, Party of Five, Wings and Homicide: Life on the Streets. Stefan continues to juggle being a performer and educator, serving as a professor and clinician while working regularly as a musician.
Magnus Broo is a Swedish jazz trumpeter known for recording and collaborating with Norwegian jazz musicians, like the band, Atomic. The son of a trumpeter, Magnus was raised in Västervik, Sweden, and performed in big band before attending the University of North Texas. Back in Sweden, he was incorporated into the Fredrik Norén Band and collaborated in the Lennart Åberg Orchestra. Magnus’ style is a continuation of free jazz and Ornette Coleman’s style from the 1960s, and he is a central musician in the Norwegian/Swedish band Atomic. He also leads his own Magnus Broo Quartet and works with the Fredrik Nordström Quintet.
